Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye is one of the true great artists to emerge out of the Motown music scene that dominated the charts in the nineteen-sixties and seventies. He had a unique style all his own and he among all the Motown artists had the most success in breaking through the race barrier and conquering the pop radio charts. Marvin Gaye had a smooth soul image that cast him as cooler then the backside of your pillow, in the publics eyes and his soulful ballads, sang in his own unique style, only served to reinforce this public image.

Most of his work was done as a solo artist but he also recorded with female singers, on a number of hits in the sixties. His hit single, "Whats Goin’ On," was truly ahead of its time, by at least thirty years, but still climbed the charts to become a top hit. In "Whats Goin’ On," he was able to catch the public’s attention with a song about environmentalism and conservation during a time when most people were giving it little consideration.

Marvin Gaye was a difficult artist for the business people who managed his career. There are endless stories of his antics, that kept the image damage control people at Motown busy. Had it not been for his magnitude of raw talent as a singer and song writer, there is no doubt, that he would have been out of a job at Motown, in the early stages of his career, due to his behaviour.

At one stage in his career he became involved in a romance with a sixteen year old female friend, which completely freaked out his friends and executives at Motown Records. One after another, they came to him and begged him to cut off the affair. So to spite them, he wrote and recorded a love ballad about his new relationship and named it "Lets Get It On." It shot up the charts and became a smash hit, so like so many of his antics he ended up having the last laugh.

Marvin Gaye’s career was full of ups and downs and in the later stages of his career he seemed to have trouble getting along with anyone. He became more and more reclusive and more and more reliant on cocaine. He let those around him know that he wanted to end his life and talked of suicide. His wish was finally granted when he provoked his father into shooting him during a violent confrontation at his parents’ home where he had sought refuge after a series of mental breakdowns.
